Liao Yuqun — former director of the Institute for the History of Natural Science at the Chinese Academy of Sciences — takes the old phrase 医者意也 (“the physician’s mind”) as the key to understanding traditional Chinese medicine. Tracing the idea from the Book of the Later Han through the theory and practice of diagnosis and treatment, he asks what role intuition, judgment and imagination actually play in the physician’s art, and what that reveals about Chinese medicine as a system of thought.
